Vocal group One Direction makes waves on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart this week as its “What Makes You Beautiful” debuts at No. 28. It’s the highest bow for a U.K. act’s debut U.S. single in nearly 14 years.

“Beautiful” sold 132,000 downloads in its first week according to Nielsen SoundScan, starting at No. 12 on the Digital Songs chart.

Formed on the 2010 edition of the U.K.’s “X Factor” TV program, the male quintet earns the highest new-Brit Hot 100 launch since the Verve’s “Bittersweet Symphony” entered at No. 13 on the chart dated March 28, 1998. (While that wasn’t necessarily the Verve’s very first single, it was their first Hot 100 entry.)

To be more exacting, the last U.K. act (solo or otherwise) to start higher than One Direction with their true first U.S. single was singer Jimmy Ray with “Are You Jimmy Ray?” on Feb. 21, 1998 (No. 26).

Katy Perry’s ‘Part of Me’ Debuts Atop Hot 100

Finally, the last U.K. group to see its first U.S. single start higher was the Spice Girls, when “Wannabe” landed at No. 11 on Jan. 25, 1997. “Wannabe” vaulted to No. 1 four weeks later, spending four straight weeks at the top of the tally.

The success of “Beautiful” may only be just beginning. It makes its retail launch even before One Direction’s record label — Columbia — officially begins going for airplay at pop radio next week.

One Direction comprises Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. All of the group hails from U.K., save for Horan, who is from Ireland. The five young gents (ages 18-20) have nabbed three top three U.K. singles and reached No. 2 with its debut album “Up All Night” in November 2011. “Night” will be released in the U.S. on March 13 via SYCO/Columbia.

Last night (Feb. 21), the act won its first Brit Award (essentially the U.K. equivalent of the U.S.’ Grammy) for best British single for “What Makes You Beautiful.” (The category is one of three Brit Awards determined by a public vote.)

Next up for the group will be a U.S. tour with Big Time Rush beginning Feb. 24 in Chicago, with dates lined up through March 9 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. They’ll also play NBC’s “Today” show on March 12 — the day before “Up All Night” is released.

One Direction follows in the recent success of fellow U.K. quintet the Wanted, who jump 25-23 on the Hot 100 this week with “Glad You Came.” So far, the single has moved 418,000 downloads. The song also rises 16-13 on the Pop Songs airplay tally this week.

One Direction were met by a huge crowd fans at Paris’ Gare Du Nord train station yesterday afternoon – and it proved troublesome for Liam Payne.

The lads bravely stepped off the Eurostar from London into the chaos, but it all proved too much for Liam, 18, who got separated from his footwear.

And cheeky band mate Harry Styles, 18, found the incident so funny he told his 2,021,948 followers all about it on Twitter.

‘Hahaha Liam lost his shoe in the station. That was crazy!! Thanks for coming to see us,’ he Tweeted.

Oh no! We hope it wasn’t one of your leopard print hi-tops, Liam?

One Direction have won their first ever BRIT Award, picking up the prize for Best Single at tonight’s ceremony.

The boyband fought off competition from The Wanted, Adele, Pixie Lott, JLS and more to take home the award.

Getting up on stage, Louis Tomlinson thanked the radio listeners who voted for ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ to win the award. Liam Payne meanwhile thanked the band’s label Syco. Harry Styles shared a moment with Tinie Tempah, who handed the award to the boys.

Simon Cowell Tweeted his approval of the result, saying: “Fantastic news. Congrats @onedirection I am very proud of you”

The One Direction lads will be celebrating tonight having just won best British Single at the BRIT Awards 2012.

What Makes You Beautiful was one of the most catchy tracks of 2011 and the boyband’s army of loyal, largely female, fans voted for the hit to be recognised at the glittering bash.

Heading to the stage, looking sharp as ever in variations of grey suits (we love Harry’s bowtie passion), Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Niall Horan were ecstatic as they accepted the award.

Cheeky chap Louis said: “We can not believe that we are stood here on this stage… This award is for the fans, we wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for you.”

Harry had a bit of mic trouble, not that you could really hear him for screaming girls anyway, but Liam, rocking a new haircut, rescued the situation thanking boss Simon Cowell and SYCO.

Niall echoed the sentiment of his bandmates telling the 1D fans: “this is for you!”

BRITs host James Corden, who is good friends with the band, ushered them off stage, saying: “Thank you so much you beautiful boys, go ring your mums, tell them you’ll be home late tonight.”

One Direction has become one of the most popular boybands in the UK since shooting to fame on The X Factor back in 2010.

Most recently the handsome boys have been making waves across the pond, with their debut release, the now award winning What Makes You Beautiful, making it to number ten on the U.S. iTunes Top 100 Songs chart.

Recently, they made a guest appearance in Nickelodean sitcom iCarly, before delighting fans with a double performance on Dancing on Ice.

Tonight, the boys beat off stiff competition from the liked of Adele, Ed Sheeran, Jessie J and boyband rivals The Wanted and JLS.

Not bad for five lads who came third on The X Factor.
